Current weather in Seoul can be summed up in one word, ‘scorching’! It is soaring up to 38 degrees Celsius. It is the second hottest summer on record. 1994 was the hottest year ever in Korea and Kim Il-sung died that year. I recall that everyone suffered terrible summer heat and worried about the threat of a war since Kim Il-sung’s death. At the moment I am glad I am only worried about the summer heat and global warming in making a peaceful mood with North Korea.
For this hot summer what you need is only holidays! Let’s go to the mountains, rivers and beaches to escape the heat of the city and enjoy your summer.
Summer Vacation in Jejudo
Dolhareubang (stone grandpa) welcomes you at Jeju Airport.
Jejudo(Jeju Island) is a popular vacation spot every season in Korea. The weather of Jejudo is moderate most of the time because it is located at the most southern part of Korea. Jejudo has Mt. Hallasan and many beaches. People come to see its beautiful scenery and enjoy activities, like trekking, zip-line, sea-walking, kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, and more.
Aewol
People enjoy clear turquoise waters of Aewol, hopping in transparent kayak. It looks like a small adventure to non-swimmers like me.
Two famous cafes in Aewol are cafe ‘Bomnal’ and cafe ‘Monsant de aewol’. The glass building is Monsant cafe. The yellow one which is closer to the seaside is Bomnal cafe. Monsant de aewol is famous for its owner, G-Dragon of K-pop group Big Bang. It was really busy there, so I had to head to another cafe, Bomnal. It felt great watching the seascape sitting in an air-conditioned cafe with an iced coffee.
Deoreok Elementary school
Deoreok Elementary school is well known for colorfully painted buildings. It had been a branch of Aewol Elementary school until last year. Deoreok branch school grew to the elementary school. The number of students has been increasing ever since more people move into Jeju Island. It is absolutely a wonderful photographic site to get stunning shots, but also a primary school for students. You need to behave well in the place for the young children.
Geumneung Beach
Every beaches in Jeju Island have different attractions. So people visiting Jeju have preferences in beaches. As for me, Geumneung Beach is my favorite one. Geumneung Beach is located next to Hyeopjae Beach, which is popular and known for its bright-blue water. It is almost same color as Hyeopjae Beach and much less crowded. The water is not deep, so good for children to play in.
St. Isidore Farm
This building, named Cteshphon, used to be a barn. Cteshphon is a style of Iraq architecture nearly 2,000 years ago. It becomes popular place to take a picture because of the exotic atmosphere.
St. Isidore Milk Cafe, Uyubudan, is a popular dessert cafe. The cafe serves homemade dairy ice cream and milk teas, which ingredients are made from their farm.
Seogwipo Olle Market and Jeju Dongmun Market
Dolhareubang-shape bread with sweet tangerine filling.
Hallabong(Jeju Orange) Juice at Seogwipo Olle Market.
Korean Sausage and Rice Soup (Sundae-gukbap).
Omegi-tteok, Jeju specialty rice cake with sweet red beans inside and out.
O’sulloc Tea Museum and Tea Stone
Everything about Korean green tea in the tea museum. There is no entrance fee.
What a cute cake! It is fun to fold in white chocolate and pour into a top of the Hallasan cake yourself.
Tea Stone building has three glass walls. I took a tea class to learn tea etiquette and a tea ceremony in the building. It was calm and relaxing time. The green tea which is steeped right way was not bitter! I was making green tea wrong.
The class is carried out in Korean. Reservation is required in the website. (30,000 won for 2 Persons.)
