A Summer Holiday In Gangwon-do

Yangyang and Sokcho in Gangwon-do have been popular weekend trip destinations in recent years. This popularity has risen thanks to the Seoul–Yangyang Expressway, which enables the travel between Seoul and Yangyang within 2.5 hours. Before this highway was paved, it took more than 4 hours from Seoul to Sokcho. Yangyang and Sokcho are indeed great summer destinations. They have Seoraksan, the third highest mountain in Korea, and the crystal clear blue ocean, which is unbeatable compared to Yellow Sea.

To be honest, I am not a big fan of summer in Korea. Summer in Korea is too hot and too humid. I usually escape from Korea in August. This year is my first time to stay in Korea in August in 4 years. If you are like me who hates August weather in Seoul, Gangwon-do can be a really nice summer resort where the temperature is bit lower than that in Seoul. So, last weekend I went to Gangwon-do as a summer holiday. It was so great that I highly recommend Yangyang and Sokcho to anyone who loves the ocean, surfing, or a forest bath.

Naksan Beach

Naksan Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the east coast. Its water is relatively shallow so you can easily swim here. The beach is 4 km long and it is surrounded by the pine tree forest.

Naksansa

Naksansa is right next to Naksan Beach. I think Naksansa is a must visit place in Gangwon-do. It was my second visit to Naksansa. My first time was on a high school field trip. Naksansa is beautiful in every possible way. I was also told that its temple stay program is quite relaxing and meals are pretty great. 😉

On this road you can do foot massage while walking. I love this!
In Korea, many people make a wish upon a stone.
The Buddhist statue of Haesu gwaneumsang
They offered free Lotus tea to visitors.
There is a cafe where you can enjoy the view of the East Sea.

Seaside Garden

This cafe is the biggest cafe I have ever been to. It consists of two buildings and a vast seaside garden. I would say the price is reasonable for the stunning view. It is a very instagrammable place so you can spend hours only to take pictures.

Snow Crab

Of course, Sokcho is famous for seafood. Snow crab is Sokcho’s specialty so I had snow crab for dinner.

Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market

Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market is a foodie’s paradise. Dakgangjeong (sweet crispy chicken), sultteok (rice cake made by rice wine), hotteok (sweet pancake), Sikhye (sweet rice beverage), Gamja-jeon (potato pancake), and more are waiting for you!
