Seoul Arts Center

This post is for art lovers. 😉

When I am living in Seoul, I visit Seoul Arts Center around once a month for classical music concerts, classic ballet performances, or art exhibitions. Seoul Arts Center is an arts complex built in 1988 with a mission to provide visitors with top quality cultural events. It is indeed a great place to enjoy all kinds of art.

Location

I would say it is not so convenient to visit Seoul Arts Center. The main reason is that it is a bit isolated from most of the tourist attractions of Seoul City. In addition, Seoul Arts Center is little far from the subway station. It takes about 12~15 minutes on foot from Nambu Bus Terminal Station (Seoul Subway Line 3). I usually take the bus No. 22 at exit No.5 of Nambu Bus Terminal Station. Then it is only 2 stops away.

Seoul Arts Center covers an area of 231,000m² and there are five major buildings. Each building has its own symbol as you can see below; (clockwise from top left) Opera House, Music Hall, Seoul Calligraphy Art Museum, Hangaram Design Museum, Hangaram Art Museum.

Facilities

Seoul Arts Center is a home to major cultural institutions such as Korean National Ballet, Korea National Opera, The National Chorus of Korea, Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, Korean Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Performing Arts Company, Arko(Arts Council Korea) Arts Archive, and The Korean Cultural & Arts Centers Association. You can also find cafes, restaurants, convenience stores, record shops, flower shops, specialty stores, etc.

Performances & Exhibitions

The best way to check performances and exhibitions held in Seoul Art Center is to visit its website. You can also buy the tickets on the website.

This is the Opera Theater with the poster of The Taming of the Shrew (말괄량이 길들이기) performed by Korean National Ballet.

This is Music Hall which consists of Concert Hall, Recital Hall and IBK Chamber Hall.

Tip

There are a few dining places in and around Seoul Art Center. However, I personally do not like most of restaurants within SAC. Food and beverages are bit pricey but the taste is not that fabulous. I recommend one restaurant, Baengnyeonok (백년옥), which is across the main road from Seoul Arts Center. It has been awarded a bib gourmand in the Michelin Guide 2018.

Another eatery I recommend is Yehyang (예향), a cafeteria. It is located between the Opera House and Hangaram Art Museum (the red circle on the map below). Please keep it mind that it is little bit hard to find the place but there is a sign on the ground and you will just have to follow the sign even though it does not seem like a path to the restaurant.

Opening times – Lunch 11:30 ~ 14:00, Dinner 16:30 ~ 19:30 (Monday: 16:30 – 17:30 ) *Last Monday of each month: dinner is not available. The price is quite reasonable (6,000 ~ 7,000 won) as it is a cafeteria. 😉
