Buying Hanbok

It has been a new trend to wear Hanbok for going out on a palace visit in Seoul. The traditional clothing is no longer for special occasions. In these days, even foreign visitors enjoy wearing Hanbok and take a photo in Gyeongbok Palace or Bukchon Hanok Village. It looks so lovely~

If you love Hanbok and want to buy one, I would like to recommend you to visit Gwangjang market. Gwangjang market is one of the big traditional markets in Seoul and Hanbok market is part of the market. Actually Gwangjang market is in itself worth visiting. I posted about Gwangjang market before.

Hanbok would be a nice souvenir for yourself. But the thing is the price and time. Hanbok is usually tailor-made. It means that having Hanbok clothes made is rather expensive. The cost varies according to the textile materials. It costs about 200,000 won to 500,000 won. And it takes time to make the clothes. It takes about two to six weeks. It depends on a design and fabrics selected. You need enough time to have your Hanbok, but it is worth waiting for.

In Korea, main customers in Hanbok market are couples who are getting married. Both bride’s mothers and groom’s mothers should wear the traditional Korean dress, Hanbok on the wedding day. Couple also wear Hanbok after the wedding ceremony.

The other main customers of Hanbok are children. In Korea, people celebrate the hundredth day of baby born and the first birth day of the baby. Whole family gets together and has a feast. Babies wear Hanbok on their party. And the traditional holidays like Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving day) or Seollal (New Year’s Day) are also the biggest for Hanbok sales. Many children dress up Hanbok on the days. They are so cute and adorable!

That’s why I highly recommend to get a children’s Hanbok if you are travelling with your kid. A variety of sizes of a ready-made Hanbok for children are stocked. It would be easier to buy child’s Hanbok than adult’s one. Most children’s Hanboks cost less than 100,000 won. The cost would be about 60,000 won without accessories.

You might get a discount when you buy more Hanboks with accessories. Enjoy your Hanbok shopping and the Korean local market.

Hello! I’m from Romania and I’m a HUGE fan of traditional Korean clothing. I wanted to ask you if you can make a royal hanbok? (like the ones I’ve seen in different movies). I’m really searching for a long time someone who can produce these type of things, but it’s hard to find especially because I’m from Romania. Thanks anyway for your help!
Here’s 2 links to understand what type of hanbok I mean:
